Private sale or consignment: which way should you sell your car?
Selling a car privately can give you more control and potentially allow you to keep more of the final sale price.
It can also mean doing everything yourself.
Advertising, photography, pricing, answering enquiries, arranging inspections, dealing with no-shows, negotiating with buyers, handling paperwork and making sure payment is secure all become your responsibility.
Car consignment is different.
Instead of managing the sale yourself, you appoint a dealer or agent to prepare, advertise and handle the vehicle on your behalf. You still own the car until it is sold, but much of the selling process is handled for you.
Neither option is automatically better. The right choice depends on the car, your time, your confidence dealing with buyers and how involved you want to be.
Selling your car privately
A private sale usually gives the owner the most direct control over the process.
You choose the asking price, where the car is advertised, how it is presented and which offers you are willing to accept.
For owners who understand the market, have time available and are comfortable dealing with strangers, that can work very well.
The obvious attraction is cost. There is no dealer success fee, so if you sell the car at your target price, more of the sale proceeds remain with you.
But the selling price is only one part of the equation.
What does a private seller actually need to do?
A good private listing usually involves more than taking a few phone photos and posting an advertisement.
You may need to:
- research the market and decide on a realistic asking price;
- clean and prepare the vehicle;
- take high-quality photographs;
- write the advertisement;
- pay listing or advertising fees;
- respond to messages and phone calls;
- filter genuine buyers from low-quality enquiries;
- arrange inspections and test drives;
- negotiate the final price;
- manage payment safely;
- complete the required transfer paperwork;
- and deal with any follow-up questions from the buyer.
For some sellers, none of this is a problem.
For others, the time involved becomes the main cost.
The biggest challenge is often enquiry quality
One of the least predictable parts of selling a car privately is dealing with enquiries.
A well-priced vehicle can attract serious buyers, but it can also attract unrealistic offers, repeated questions already answered in the advertisement, inspection requests that never happen and buyers who are comparing many cars at once.
The more specialised or expensive the vehicle, the more important buyer qualification becomes.
A late-model European car, performance vehicle, modified 4WD or higher-value SUV may require a more detailed conversation than an ordinary commuter car.
Buyers often want to understand service history, options, previous ownership, condition, finance possibilities and what preparation has been completed.
What is car consignment?
Car consignment means the owner appoints a dealership or selling agent to market and manage the sale while ownership remains with the seller until the transaction is completed.
The exact service varies between businesses.
At Safeway Auto, our consignment process is designed for owners who want their car professionally prepared, presented and marketed without personally managing every enquiry and inspection.
The vehicle is assessed first so we can decide whether consignment is suitable and agree on a realistic selling strategy.
What Safeway Auto’s consignment service includes
Our current consignment launch package is $990 including GST.
It includes the work required to properly bring the vehicle to market, including:
- vehicle assessment;
- professional detailing and presentation;
- professional photography;
- Carsales Showcase advertising for up to three months;
- listing on the Safeway Auto website;
- social media exposure where appropriate;
- buyer enquiry handling;
- inspection coordination;
- negotiation support;
- and sale administration and paperwork.
When the car sells, the success fee is 5% including GST, with a minimum success fee of $2,000 and a maximum success fee of $5,000.
The purpose of the structure is straightforward: the upfront package covers the work required to properly prepare and launch the car, while the success fee is tied to completing the sale.
Where consignment can make sense
Consignment can be particularly useful when the seller:
- does not want strangers visiting their home;
- does not have time to manage calls and messages;
- wants professional vehicle photography and presentation;
- is uncomfortable negotiating directly;
- owns a vehicle that benefits from showroom presentation;
- wants buyers to have access to finance introductions;
- or simply wants someone else to manage the process.
It can also help when a vehicle needs a more considered sales approach.
Some cars sell mainly on price. Others sell on specification, condition, provenance, presentation and how well their story is communicated.
What consignment does not mean
Consignment does not guarantee a particular selling price or guarantee that a vehicle will sell within a certain time.
The market still determines what buyers are prepared to pay.
An unrealistic asking price remains unrealistic whether a car is being sold privately or through a dealership.
That is why agreeing on a sensible market position at the beginning is important.
Good consignment should improve the quality of the selling process. It cannot override the market.
Private sale may still be the better choice
We do not think every seller needs consignment.
If you have a straightforward vehicle, plenty of time, good photographs, confidence dealing with buyers and a clear understanding of its market value, selling privately may be the most economical option.
That is particularly true if saving the selling fee matters more to you than saving time.
The key is being realistic about how much work you are prepared to do.
Private sale vs consignment at a glance
Private sale may suit you if:
- you want full control;
- you are comfortable handling enquiries and inspections;
- you have time available;
- you are confident negotiating;
- and keeping selling costs as low as possible is your priority.
Consignment may suit you if:
- you value convenience;
- you want professional preparation and photography;
- you do not want to manage buyer enquiries personally;
- you prefer inspections to happen away from your home;
- or your vehicle benefits from a more professional sales environment.
Selling a car in Brisbane

Safeway Auto is a boutique used car dealership at 4 Ferry Road, West End, Brisbane.
We buy cars directly, accept trade-ins and offer consignment for suitable vehicles.
Those are three different options.
If speed and certainty matter most, a direct sale may make more sense.
If you are replacing your current car with another vehicle, a trade-in may be simpler.
If you want to aim for a retail sale without managing the process yourself, consignment may be worth considering.
The right approach depends on your priorities.
