Dealer-backed consignment

What car consignment means.

Car consignment means Safeway Auto sells your car on your behalf. You retain ownership of the vehicle until the sale is completed, while we manage the presentation, advertising and buyer enquiries.

Selling privately can achieve a stronger result, but it also means advertising, enquiries, inspections, test drives, negotiation and paperwork. Safeway brings those parts together into one managed dealership service.

Genuine offers are discussed with you before any sale is agreed.

Prefer a direct offer? Sell your car to us, or trade it in on your next Safeway car.

Questions

Consignment questions, answered.

What is car consignment?

Car consignment means Safeway Auto sells your car on your behalf. You retain ownership of the vehicle until the sale is completed, while we manage the presentation, advertising and buyer enquiries.

How much does Safeway Auto consignment cost?

There are two fees, both including GST: a $990 Consignment Launch Package paid upfront, and a 5% success fee when the vehicle is successfully sold through Safeway Auto. The success fee has a $2,000 minimum and a $5,000 maximum.

What does the $990 Consignment Launch Package include?

It covers preparing and launching your vehicle: detailing and preparation, professional photography, Carsales Showcase advertising for up to three months, exposure on the Safeway Auto website, social media promotion, and setting up and managing the listing.

Who owns the car while it is on consignment?

You do. The owner retains ownership of the vehicle until the sale is completed.

Who handles buyer enquiries and test drives?

Safeway Auto manages buyer enquiries, inspections and test drives. Any genuine offer is discussed with you before a sale proceeds.

How is consignment different from a direct sale or trade-in?

A direct sale is the simplest route when speed and certainty matter most. A trade-in is designed for customers buying another Safeway vehicle and changing over their current car. Consignment suits owners seeking a retail-market sale while Safeway manages presentation, advertising and buyer enquiries.

Where is Safeway Auto located?

What kind of vehicles are suitable for consignment?

Well-presented vehicles with a realistic retail market and enough value to justify a professionally managed sale, such as quality late-model, premium or enthusiast vehicles with a strong service history. If another selling option makes more sense, we’ll tell you.
