People often ask me whether they should get ceramic coating or PPF, as if they do the same job. They don’t. Here is the simple version.
Wax and sealants
Wax and spray sealants sit on top of the paint. They add shine and help water bead off, and you can apply them yourself. The downside is that they wear off quickly, usually within weeks to a few months, and they offer very little protection against anything serious.
Good for: people who enjoy looking after their car and don’t mind reapplying often.
Ceramic coating
A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and cures into a hard, clear layer. It lasts much longer than wax, adds gloss, makes washing easier, and helps resist UV, bird and bat droppings, bugs and tree sap. It needs proper paint preparation first, and it does not stop stone chips or deep scratches.
Good for: keeping the whole car glossy and easier to clean, especially cars parked outside. Read more in is ceramic coating worth it?
Paint protection film (PPF)
PPF is a clear film applied to the paint. It is a physical barrier, so it absorbs stone chips, road debris and light scratches on the areas it covers. Many modern films can recover from light surface marks. It is usually applied to high-impact areas, such as the front bumper, bonnet and mirrors, or to the whole car.
Good for: highway driving, new cars, and protecting the front of the car from chips.

Using them together
A popular combination is PPF on the front of the car, where chips happen, and ceramic coating over the whole car, including over the film. You get chip protection where you need it most, and gloss and easier cleaning everywhere.
What I would choose
- Daily driver on the highway or motorway: PPF on the front, ceramic coating on the rest.
- Garaged weekend car: ceramic coating, and PPF if you drive on the open road.
- Car parked outside under trees: ceramic coating, to make droppings and sap easier to remove before they damage the paint.
- Selling soon: a professional detail is usually enough. See how to prepare your car for sale.

Quick answers
Is PPF better than ceramic coating?
They do different jobs. PPF protects against stone chips on the areas it covers. Ceramic coating adds gloss and makes the whole car easier to clean.
Can you put ceramic coating over PPF?
Yes. Coating over the film is a common combination.
How long does wax last?
Usually weeks to a few months, depending on the product and conditions.
Which areas should get PPF?
The most common are the front bumper, bonnet, mirrors and headlights, which take the most stone chips.
