I get asked about ceramic coating all the time, by people buying a car from us and by people who just want their own car to look better. My honest answer is that it can be very worth it, but only if you understand what it does and it is done properly.
What a ceramic coating actually is
A ceramic coating is a liquid that is applied to the paint and cures into a hard, clear, protective layer. Unlike a wax, which sits on top of the paint and wears away in weeks, a coating bonds to the clear coat and lasts much longer.
What it does well
- Gloss. A properly prepared and coated car has a deep, wet-looking shine.
- Easier cleaning. Water beads and runs off, and dirt doesn’t stick as easily. Washing takes less time and effort.
- Protection from everyday contaminants. Bird and bat droppings, bugs and tree sap can etch paint in the Queensland heat. A coating gives you more time to clean them off before they do damage.
- UV resistance. It helps protect the paint from the strong Queensland sun, which fades and oxidises paint over time.
What it doesn’t do
This is where a lot of people are oversold. A ceramic coating:
- Does not stop stone chips. For that you need paint protection film on the high-impact areas.
- Is not scratch-proof. It can resist light marks, but keys, poor washing and car-park bumps will still mark it.
- Is not maintenance-free. The car still needs regular, careful washing.
- Won’t completely stop water spots, especially if water dries on the car in the sun.

Why preparation matters most
A coating locks in whatever is underneath it. If the paint has swirl marks, light scratches or water spots, the coating will preserve them, and make them easier to see under that extra gloss. That is why a good job starts with a thorough wash and decontamination, then paint correction where needed, before the coating is applied. Most of the time, and most of the result, is in that preparation.
When it is worth it
- A new or near-new car you plan to keep for a few years.
- A car that lives outside, under trees or near the coast.
- Dark colours, which show swirls and marks more easily.
- People who wash their own car and want it to stay looking good with less effort.
When it may not be
If the paint is badly faded, peeling or due for a respray, fix that first. And if you just want a quick tidy-up before selling, a professional detail may be all you need. Read our guide to preparing your car for sale.
What affects the cost
The price depends on the size of the car, the condition of the paint, how much correction it needs, and which package and extras you choose, such as wheels and glass. That is why we quote each car individually rather than giving a one-size-fits-all price.
Ceramic coating at Safeway
Our ceramic coating is done with our detailing partner, to the same standard we use to prepare the cars we sell. Every car is cleaned, prepared and assessed before the coating goes on. You can request a quote for your car, and we will confirm the right package and price once we know the car and its paint condition. Read how to look after a ceramic-coated car.
Quick answers
How long does a ceramic coating last?
It depends on the product, the preparation and how the car is looked after. Ask your installer what the specific product is rated for and what maintenance it needs.
Does ceramic coating stop stone chips?
No. Ceramic coating helps with gloss, cleaning and chemical and UV resistance. For stone chips you need paint protection film.
Is ceramic coating better than wax?
It lasts much longer than wax and is more resistant to the elements, but it costs more and needs proper preparation.
Is ceramic coating worth it on a used car?
It can be, especially after paint correction. The paint is restored first, then protected.
