The best way to avoid buying the wrong car is to ask good questions, and listen carefully to the answers. Here are the ones I would ask, whether you are buying from a dealer or a private seller.
About the car’s history
Does it have a full service history?
Ask to see the service book and receipts. Servicing should be on time and match the kilometres. Gaps are a reason to ask more questions.
Has it been in an accident or had paintwork?
Ask directly, then look for yourself: uneven panel gaps, paint that doesn’t quite match, or overspray on rubber seals.
How many owners has it had?
Fewer owners isn’t always better, but the answer should match the history.
About ownership and money
Is there any finance owing?
Ask, then confirm it yourself with a PPSR check. It also shows if the car has been written off or reported stolen.
Is the registration current, and is there a safety certificate?
In Queensland a registered car being sold needs a current safety certificate. Read our safety certificate guide.

About how it has been used
Why are you selling it?
There are plenty of good reasons. A vague or changing answer is worth noting.
How has it been driven?
City commuting, towing, off-roading and track days all leave different wear.
Are there any known problems?
Ask directly. An honest seller will tell you about faults, warning lights or anything due soon, such as tyres or brakes.
About what is included
Are both keys included?
Replacement keys for modern cars can be expensive.
Does it come with any warranty?
A private sale usually has none. A licensed dealer may be required to provide statutory warranty, depending on the car’s age and kilometres. Read statutory warranty in Queensland.
Can I have it inspected?
A genuine seller should be happy for you to arrange an independent inspection.
Buying from a dealer or privately?
The questions are the same, but the protections are different. Read dealer vs private seller and how we select the cars we sell.
