The Tiguan is one of the most popular European SUVs in Australia. It feels solid, drives well and has a practical, well-made cabin. The 162TSI Highline is the quick, well-equipped version. Bought well, it is a great family car. Bought badly, a European SUV can get expensive.
The basics
The second-generation Tiguan 162TSI uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine making 162 kW and 350 Nm, a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic and 4Motion all-wheel drive. It runs on premium unleaded. Other versions use smaller engines or diesel, so check exactly which one you are looking at.
The DSG gearbox
The DSG gives quick gear changes and good economy, but it feels different to a conventional automatic at very low speeds. On the test drive, move off gently several times, creep in traffic and reverse up a slope. It should be smooth. Shuddering, clunks or hesitation are worth investigating before you buy. Ask whether any gearbox services on the schedule have been done.

Engine and cooling system
Look for any sign of coolant loss or leaks, and make sure there are no warning lights. Some owners of cars with this engine family have reported cooling-system leaks over time, so a car that has been checked and serviced regularly is a better bet.
Servicing
European cars reward regular servicing. I want to see a complete service history, done on time, from Volkswagen or a qualified specialist. Read our guide to buying a used European car for more on what to look for.
The usual checks still apply
Run a PPSR check, check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register, and test the powered tailgate, seats, cameras and screens.

We currently have a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan 162TSI Highline with low kilometres for its age in our West End showroom. You can see it at the end of this article, and read how we select used cars.
