The X5 M Competition is a family SUV with supercar performance. It is one of the fastest SUVs BMW has made, and it still carries five people and their luggage in comfort. Used, it can be a lot of car for the money. But it is also a car where the condition and history matter more than usual.
The basics
The F95 X5 M Competition uses a 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 making 460 kW and 750 Nm, with an eight-speed automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive. It is quoted at 3.8 seconds from 0 to 100 km/h. That performance comes with matching running costs.
Tyres and brakes
These cars run large, staggered wheels and performance tyres, with different sizes front and rear. They wear quickly, especially if the car has been driven hard, and a full set is expensive. Check the tread depth on all four, look for uneven wear, and look at the brake discs and pads. Factor any replacements into the price.

How has it been driven?
Some X5 Ms are used as quick, comfortable family cars. Others have done track days and plenty of hard launches. Ask the owner directly, look for signs of track use such as heavily worn tyre shoulders or aftermarket brake pads, and pay attention to how the gearbox and all-wheel-drive system feel on the test drive.
Servicing
For a car like this, I want to see a complete service history from BMW or a qualified specialist, done on time. Check the condition-based service display in the car, and ask whether any major items have been done. Modifications, especially to engine software or the exhaust, need explaining and should be declared to your insurer.
The First Edition
BMW built a limited X5 M Competition First Edition with special paint and carbon-fibre trim, and only a handful came to Australia. If you are looking at one, check that the First Edition details are present and original, and ask for the build documentation.
The usual checks still apply
Run a PPSR check, which matters even more on a high-value car, check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register, and read our guide to buying a used European car.
