Buying a Used BMW 3 Series: What to Check
What to check before buying a used BMW 3 Series (G20) in Australia: the 320i engine, pre- and post-update models, M Sport, servicing and technology.
The 3 Series has been the benchmark small luxury sedan for decades. The G20 generation is a great all-rounder: comfortable, efficient, well-equipped and still enjoyable to drive. The 320i M Sport is one of the most popular versions in Australia.
The basics
The G20 3 Series arrived in Australia in 2019. The 320i uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine making 135 kW and 300 Nm, with an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive. It runs on premium unleaded. The 330i and M340i offer more performance.
Before or after the update?
BMW updated the G20 around late 2022, with a new front-end design and a large curved display combining the instruments and touchscreen. The updated cars feel more modern inside. Earlier cars can be good value. Check which version you are looking at, and compare prices on that basis.
Wheels, tyres and brakes
M Sport cars often run larger wheels with low-profile tyres. They look great but are easy to damage on kerbs. Check every wheel, the tyre wear and the brakes.
Servicing
