The Audi Q5 is a popular mid-size luxury SUV. It is comfortable, quiet and beautifully finished inside, and a used one can cost far less than a new one. Like any European car, it rewards careful buying.
The basics
The second-generation Q5, known as the FY, arrived in Australia in 2017. The 45 TFSI uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine making 183 kW and 370 Nm, a seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch automatic and quattro all-wheel drive. It runs on premium unleaded. Diesel and higher-performance versions were also sold, so check exactly which one you are looking at.
The S tronic gearbox
The S tronic gives quick, smooth changes when it is healthy. On the test drive, move off gently several times, creep in traffic and reverse up a slope. Shuddering, hesitation or clunks are worth investigating. Ask about any gearbox servicing on the schedule.

Engine and cooling
Check for coolant loss, leaks and warning lights. Some cars with this engine family have needed cooling-system repairs over time, so regular servicing and a car that has been looked after matter.
Servicing and running costs
Servicing a Q5 costs more than a mainstream SUV, and so do tyres and brakes. A complete service history from Audi or a qualified specialist is what I want to see. Read our guide to buying a used European car for more.
The usual checks still apply
Run a PPSR check, check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register, and look closely at the wheels for kerb damage.
