What Really Sets Your Trade-In Value? A Dealer’s View

How a dealer actually works out what your car is worth as a trade-in, what doesn’t matter as much as people think, and simple ways to get a fairer offer.

Almost everyone who trades in a car with us asks the same thing: how did you come up with that number? It’s a fair question. A trade-in value isn’t a guess, and it isn’t a fixed price from a book. Here is how a dealer actually thinks about it, and what you can do to get a fairer offer.

The short version

A dealer starts with what your car is likely to sell for, then takes away what it will cost to prepare and the time and risk of selling it. That is the trade-in value. Everything else is detail about those three things.

The five things that matter most

1. Condition

Paintwork, panels, wheels, tyres, interior wear and how the car drives. A dealer has to get the car to a standard they are happy to sell, so every scratch, kerbed wheel or worn tyre is a cost they have to cover.

2. History

A full service history is one of the most valuable things you can hand over. It shows the car has been looked after and makes it easier to sell. A clear PPSR matters too. If there is finance owing, it has to be paid out as part of the deal, so tell the dealer upfront.

3. Kilometres

Lower kilometres for the age usually means a higher value, but the service history often matters more than the number on the odometer. A well-serviced car with average kilometres can be worth more than a neglected low-kilometre one.

4. Specification

The exact variant, engine, drivetrain and factory options all count. A higher-grade model with desirable factory features is worth more than the base version of the same car, even if they look similar on a listing.

5. The current market

This is the one nobody controls. Demand for a particular model, colour or fuel type changes over time, and how many similar cars are for sale right now affects how quickly yours would sell.

What doesn’t matter as much as people think

  • What you paid for it. The market only cares what the car is worth today.
  • Most aftermarket accessories. Modifications and add-ons rarely add value, and some make a car harder to sell.
  • Money you have spent recently. New tyres or a recent service help the condition, but you rarely get the full cost back in the price.

How to get a fairer trade-in offer

  1. Bring the service history. Books, invoices, anything that shows how the car has been maintained.
  2. Find both keys. A missing key is a real cost to replace.
  3. Clean the car. It won’t change the mechanical value, but it shows the car has been cared for and makes it easier to assess.
  4. Be honest about damage and faults. They will be found during the inspection anyway, and an honest description usually leads to a better conversation.
  5. Send clear photos first. A few good photos help us give you a more accurate appraisal before you come in.
  6. Tell us about any finance owing. It doesn’t stop a trade-in, but it needs to be part of the plan.

Compare the changeover, not just the trade-in number

A high trade-in figure doesn’t mean much on its own. What matters is the difference you pay between your current car and the next one. A dealer offering more for your trade-in but charging more for their car may not be the better deal. I explain this in more detail in trade-in vs selling privately.

Trade-in, direct sale or consignment?

  • Trade-in suits you if you are buying one of our cars and want both handled in one changeover.
  • Direct sale suits you if you just want to sell, without buying.
  • Consignment suits you if you want to aim for a retail price and are happy to wait while we sell it for you.

Quick answers

How is a trade-in value calculated?

From what the car is likely to sell for, less the cost of preparing it and the time and risk of selling it. Condition, history, kilometres, specification and the market drive all three.

Does a full service history increase trade-in value?

Yes. It is one of the biggest factors you can control, because it shows the car has been looked after and makes it easier to sell.

Can I trade in a car with finance owing?

Usually, yes. The finance needs to be paid out as part of the deal, so tell the dealer at the start.

Is it better to trade in or sell privately?

Selling privately can get a higher price, but it takes time and effort. A trade-in is simpler. Compare the changeover amount, not just the trade-in figure.
