Buying a Used Volkswagen Caddy Van: What to Check

What to check before buying a used Volkswagen Caddy van in Australia: the TDI320 diesel and DSG, cargo area wear, payload, diesel particulate filter and service history.

The Caddy is a popular small van with tradies, couriers and small businesses. It drives more like a car than a commercial vehicle, it is easy to park and it is efficient. Used, a Caddy can be a smart buy for a business, as long as you check how hard it has worked.

The basics

The current-generation Caddy TDI320 uses a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel making 90 kW and 320 Nm, with a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic and front-wheel drive. It has been sold as a van in standard and longer Maxi lengths, and in passenger versions. Check exactly which body and version you are looking at.

Check the cargo area

Open every door. Check the sliding door runs smoothly and latches properly, and look at the rear doors, hinges and seals. Inside, look at the floor, wall panels and tie-down points for damage. Dents, missing panels and heavy wear tell you about the van’s working life.

Payload and towing

Payload varies with the body length, version and any accessories fitted, such as shelving or a roof rack. Check the compliance plate and the manufacturer’s figures for the specific van, and make sure it suits what you plan to carry.

The diesel and DSG

Modern diesels use a particulate filter that cleans itself on longer drives. A van that only ever did short trips may have had trouble with it, so ask how it was used and watch for warning lights. Test the DSG from a standstill and in slow traffic. It should be smooth.

Service history and the usual checks

Working vehicles often skip services when the business is busy. I want to see a complete record. Run a PPSR check, because business vehicles are often financed, and check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register. If you are buying through a business, talk to your accountant about GST and tax.
