The Corolla Hybrid is one of the most sensible used cars you can buy. It is reliable, cheap to run, easy to drive and holds its value. It is especially good in Brisbane traffic, where the hybrid system does its best work.

The basics

This generation of Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-litre petrol engine with electric motors and a CVT-type automatic, making 90 kW combined. Toyota quotes around 4.2 L/100 km combined for the hatch. You never plug it in. The battery charges itself as you drive and brake.

The hybrid battery

People often worry about the hybrid battery. Toyota hybrids have a long track record, and battery problems are not common. Toyota Australia offers extended hybrid battery cover, for up to 10 years, provided the car is serviced as required, including the annual hybrid check. Ask for the service records and check with Toyota what cover applies to the specific car.

What to check on the drive

A hybrid should move off silently on electric power at low speed, then start the petrol engine smoothly. Watch for warning lights, listen for unusual noises, and check the air conditioning works well. It matters for comfort in a Queensland summer, and it is also part of how the car manages its battery temperature.

Servicing and the usual checks

Servicing on time matters even more on a hybrid because of the battery cover. Run a PPSR check, check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register, and look over the body for parking scrapes, which are common on city cars.

Is it the right size?

The Corolla hatch is a small car. It is great for one or two people and fine for a small family, but the boot and rear seat are not large. If you need more room, look at the Corolla sedan or a small SUV.
