Jaecoo is a newer name in Australia, and the J8 is its large SUV. It offers a lot of space, equipment and luxury feel for the price, and near-new ones are now appearing on the used market. Buying a newer brand second-hand means asking a few extra questions.

The J8 uses a 2.0-litre turbo petrol engine making 183 kW and 385 Nm, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It has been sold in two grades: the Track, which is front-wheel drive, and the Ridge, which is all-wheel drive. Jaecoo quotes combined fuel use of 8.6 L/100 km for the Ridge. It is tuned for a comfortable, quiet drive rather than outright performance.
Warranty: read the conditions
Jaecoo advertises a long warranty on new cars, listed at up to eight years with unlimited kilometres, but the terms depend on the brand’s conditions, including servicing. On a used J8, check the warranty start date, confirm that it transfers to you, and ask for proof that the car has been serviced as required.
Test the technology
The J8 relies heavily on screens and electronics. Go through the menus, pair your phone, check the cameras and test the driver-assistance features on the road. Some people love the way they work and some don’t, so make sure you are comfortable with them before you buy.
Near-new versus new
With newer brands, used values can move faster than with established ones. That can work in your favour as a buyer. Compare the price of a near-new J8 with the drive-away price of a new one, and weigh up the saving against any difference in warranty and specification.
