Buying a Used Hyundai Palisade: What to Check

What to check before buying a used Hyundai Palisade in Australia: petrol or diesel, the eight-seat layout, towing, warranty and service history.

The Palisade is one of the most popular large family SUVs we see. It has eight seats, a lot of equipment and a comfortable ride, and the top Calligraphy grade feels genuinely premium inside. It is also a big car, used by busy families, and that is worth keeping in mind when you buy one second-hand.

The basics

In Australia the Palisade has been offered with a 3.8-litre V6 petrol and a 2.2-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel. The diesel Calligraphy makes 147 kW and 440 Nm, with an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, and is rated to tow 2,200 kg braked. The diesel is the one most buyers want for long trips and towing. The petrol is smooth and quiet, but uses more fuel.

Check all eight seats

The Palisade is usually bought for its space, so check all of it. Fold and unfold the second and third rows, test the seat belts and look for stains, tears and broken trim. Kids, sports gear and dogs leave their marks, and some are easier to fix than others.

The Calligraphy is loaded with technology, so make sure all of it works.

Test the technology

The higher grades have a lot of electronics: cameras, driver-assistance systems, powered seats and tailgate, climate controls for each row and a large screen. Take the time to test each one. A fault in a single system may be minor, but it is better found before you buy than after.

Warranty

Hyundai offers a five-year, unlimited-kilometre factory warranty on new cars. On a late-model Palisade, check when the warranty started and what is left. Ask for the service book, because servicing on time helps keep any claim straightforward.

Towing and size

If you plan to tow, check the towbar and wiring, and ask what has been towed before. And measure your garage. The Palisade is wide and long, and some older Brisbane garages and city car parks are tight.

The usual checks still apply

Run a PPSR check, look at the service history, check for recalls by VIN on the vehicle recall register, and take a proper test drive, including some highway driving.
